Tom Magee

Tom has conjured 60 iris introductions by simply crossing the pretty ones, as he puts it. No chemicals, no background in botany, no closely held method, just a finely tuned sense of beauty exercised for 30 years. The method has worked well. Tom's most famous iris, ‘Acoma,’ was introduced in 1990, received an Honorable Mention (HM) in 92, an Award of Merit (AM) in 94, the Wister Medal in 1997, and was a strong contender for the Dykes medal in 1998, 99, and 2000. Never mind the awards, it's just plain beautiful and became a parent of several other beautiful irises. This season he selected two candidates for introduction (as always through Long's Gardens): the border bearded ‘China Cup,’ and the tall bearded ‘Old Faithful.’
